Venetian Food

Meals in mostly moderate, maybe upper moderate ($50-90) for 2, including wine - but they were SO good.......

Fritto Misto withe veggie - ooh-la-la scampi, moscardini, a small relative of octopus, calamari, small sardines/anchovy.....

Spaghetti Busara - shrimp (scampi and yes they have pincers) and tomato with anchovy for zip

The national dish of Venezia - baccala montecato (dried salt cod - reconstituted, boiled) whipped with olive oil - garlic and parsley. Looks like grainy mashed potatoes

Risotto - another Venetian speciality - shrimp and zucchini and saffron - in a very simple osteria

Sarde in Saor - fried - then marinated with vinegar and onions, raisins and pine nuts. Very Venetian

Spaghetti allo Scoglio - a little tomato in oily sauce. In Rome there would be no tomato, but maybe a couple bits of cherry tomatoes

In praise of the Venetian tramezzini ! Soft mushy bread, Wonder bread (not quite - maybe more flavor), comfort food - the wrap - crusts gone, oversized - and over filled with stuffings - tuna and egg - veggie and cheese - braesola, ham ( Italian regular ham, but it has a different spicy taste), arugula., then seafood - shrimp, crab.......lots of inventiveness. Price E 1.50 - 2 of them are a less than $4.00 sandwich of generous size. They do them in Rome too - but on a more modest scale.

To come......a photo of the seppie in its own ink, served with polenta
